Doing time.

3 Feb

A few days ago, performance artist/cultural activist Carlos Celdran was found guilty of “offending religious feelings”, a violation of Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code. Celdran disrupted a service in the Manila Cathedral two years ago when he dressed up as Jose Rizal and held up a placard with “Damaso” written on it as a protest against the Church’s meddling in the passage of the Reproductive Health Bill (this was signed as a law late last year).

I seriously did not know that there was such a law until today. Apparently it’s been there since the 1930’s. Or more likely, since Padre Damaso’s time.

Here’s the petition to free Carlos Celdran.
